Klöckner Pentaplast launches mono-PET fish board for recyclable VSP seafood packaging

Mono-PET VSP fish board with integrated liquid retention geometry, designed for recyclable seafood packaging without absorbent pads.

Klöckner Pentaplast has introduced kp Evolve® Fish Boards, a mono-PET rigid packaging solution developed for vacuum skin packaging (VSP) of processed seafood, targeting a shift away from multi-material structures.

The newly launched boards are designed to be fully recyclable within established PET recycling streams, addressing ongoing industry pressure to simplify material structures. The solution can incorporate up to 100% recycled PET (rPET), supporting compliance with evolving recyclability and extended producer responsibility (EPR) requirements while maintaining food-contact performance.

From a packaging engineering perspective, the mono-material design enables lightweighting while delivering the stiffness required for automated handling and sealing on high-speed VSP lines. The boards are engineered to ensure strong vacuum adhesion and seal integrity, helping extend shelf life and maintain product protection across chilled distribution cycles. High transparency also supports product visibility at retail.

A key innovation is the integration of kp’s Zapora® retention-chamber geometry within the board structure. This eliminates the need for absorbent pads by directing purge liquids into micro-retention zones, reducing leakage risks and improving hygiene throughout transport and display. By removing additional components, the design further simplifies pack construction and enhances recyclability.

The open-flap board configuration also improves pallet efficiency and stacking stability, contributing to logistics optimisation across the supply chain. The solution is positioned for seafood processors seeking to transition to mono-material formats without compromising on performance, machinability, or cold-chain reliability.
